Mrs. Undine Avery Fortner, age 90, of the Kibbee Community, died on Sunday, October 31, 2021, at Meadows Park Health and Rehab in Vidalia after an extended illness. Mrs. Fortner was a native of Mt. Vernon, a 1948 graduate of Brewton-Parker Institute (High School), and earned an Associate’s degree from Brewton-Parker Junior College in 1950. She began her teaching career in Montgomery County, later teaching in Athens, Savannah, and Memphis, TN, and retiring from Walter P. Jones Elementary School in Macon, after a 43 year teaching career. She was a member of the Georgia Association of Retired Teachers. She and her late husband lived in Macon 30 years, and after her retirement moved to Kibbee. She was a former member of Cross Keys Baptist Church in Macon and a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Kibbee. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Fortner; her parents, Ernest Lee Avery, Sr., and Lucile Scarborough Avery; and 1 brother, Hugh Avery.
Her family includes 2 sons, David Fortner of St. Petersburg, FL, and Sidney Fortner and wife Bang-On of Valrico, FL; 1 sister, Lynette Drew of Demorest; 1 brother, E.L. Avery, Jr., and wife Nanette of Vidalia; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held on Friday, November 5, 2021, at 3:00 p.m., in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Keith Tipton officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Greg Toole, Edwin Avery, Lee Avery and Revan Fortner.
