New Year’s Eve is a holiday that is celebrated with much pomp and splendor all over the world. Each culture has its own way of celebrating this night. Some attend midnight mass at church while others attend parties and dance till dawn. Still others stay at home having a nice dinner with their family and loved ones. Many New Year’s activities feature beautiful fireworks for greeting the New Year.

The Chinese use fireworks in order to ward off evil spirits. The Dutch eat donuts on New Year’s Eve because they believe circles symbolize good luck. The Greeks bake a special cake with a coin inside to bestow good fortune on whoever finds the coin inside their slice. The Japanese New Year’s parties symbolize farewell to the previous year and preparation for a better one ahead. In certain parts of the world

people get together to sing the Scottish folk song, “Auld Lang Syne.”

Why have we attached so much significance to this one single night? Perhaps we realize that we have enjoyed another year of life with many joys and personal triumphs; that we have survived another year’s difficulties, heartbreaks, and obstacles; and we still exist with hope for better times. Also, there is a feeling of being reborn and anew many aspects of our lives, a chance to improve ourselves, to look at our mistakes and our triumphs and learn from them and use those lessons to face the coming trials of the next year.

The New Year gives us a chance to startoverwitha clean slate. This is one unique attribute of New Year’s that sets it apart from other occasions and celebrations.
