Busy Week For Brewton-Parker Barons
The Brewton-Parker College basketball teams took on Talladega and Blue Mountain last week. BPC Split with both teams. On Saturday the Lady Barons got a win over Stillman at home.
Women vs. Talladega
Evans’ Double-Digit Performance Boosts Lady Barons Past (RV) Talladega in 84-78 Win. The Lady Barons returned to Mount Vernon to host (RV) Talladega (Ala.) on Monday night. The Lady Barons (9-5, 3-3 SSAC) downed the talented Tornadoes (12-5, 4-2 SSAC) with an 84-78 win in Gillis Gymnasium.
“We beat a really good team today,” Head Coach Steve Edwards mentioned. “We found a way to make plays and get stops when it counted the most.” 'We are learning what it takes to win games late and today, we found a way to get a big win,” Edwards added. “We have two more games this week so we will get back to work tomorrow to prepare.” The Tornadoes opened the game with a quick bucket before both teams came up emptyhanded on the following trips down the floor. About a minute and a half into the opening quarter, Madison Evans leveled the game to put the Lady Barons on the board. With two free throws in the books for Micah Bess, BPC held an early two-point lead just moments later. Talladega answered with a jumper to level the game with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter. Once the Tornadoes broke free at 6:15 left, Talladega would not look back as they held the lead for the remainder of the quarter. TC managed to build up to a nine-point lead with two minutes to play, but the Lady Barons closed out the first period with three free throws from Evans to knock the deficit to six with Talladega leading18- 12. After an opening bucket from the Tornadoes, BPC found themselves closing in with backto- back treys from Cisley Copper within the first minute of action. The Lady Barons flipped the script in the second period by finally reclaiming the lead with just under six minutes to play. BPC went on a 13-2 run that was capped off with a three-pointer from Copper, moving to a 10-point lead. Talladega managed to complete some damage control with two consecutive jumpers to close out the half. The Lady Barons headed off the court with the 36-30 lead after two quarters of play.
The opening five minutes of the third quarter included some back-andforth action with BPC narrowly outscoring TC 1110 to remain in control of the score with a sevenpoint, 47-40 lead. Talladega was still knocking on the door by pulling in to just a three-point deficit with four minutes left in the period. However, BPC held strong by outscoring Talladega 10-7 in the final minutes to close out the quarter with the 57-51 lead.
The Tornadoes quickly knocked down BPC’s lead to two in the opening minute and a half with a 6-2 run. The Lady Barons quickly responded with five points of their own to take a 64-57 lead with seven minutes remaining in the game. Over the next four minutes, BPC slowly built up its lead to 10 points before Talladega went on to answer yet again.
TC gathered 12 points to pull BPC’s lead to just two points with just under a minute remaining. BPC utilized a few free throws and a bucket to seal the 8478 victory over the Tornadoes.
Evans nearly matched her season-high tonight, scoring 23 points while shooting for 70% (7-of-10) from the field and 69.2% (9-of-13) from the charity stripe. Both Keonya Mincey and Angel McRae gathered doubledigit points with Mincey recording 11 and McRae notching 10. In addition, McRae picked up her eighth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds for the game.
As a team, BPC shot for 41.2 % (28-of-67) from the field, 19% (4-of-21) from three, and 75% (24of-32) from the free-throw line. Off the glass, Talladega outrebounded BPC 42-37 on the afternoon. Talladega gave up 19 turnovers with BPC losing 13. The Lady Barons took advantage by outscoring the Tornadoes 16-10 off turnovers. The bench for BPC produced 26 points with TC scoring 19.
Men vs. Talladega
After a pair of postponements, BPC Men’s basketball returned to action on Monday night with a tough challenge against No. 3-ranked Talladega (Ala.) in Gillis Gym. The Barons (1-18, 0-7 SSAC) were defeated by the highly ranked Tornadoes (15-1, 5-0 SSAC).
The game opened rather slow as Talladega scored first a minute into the first half. Over the course of the next four minutes, the Tornadoes outscored the Barons 9-0 to lead 11-0 in the first 15 minutes of play. BPC managed to get on the board with a bucket from TJ Taylor to pull under doubledigits.
Both teams split scoring 7-7 over the next five minutes to move the score to 18-9 in favor of Talladega. Talladega pulled away in the latter half of the period going on a 19-9 run. The Tornadoes closed out the half with a 37-18 lead.
Talladega opened the second half with a 6-0 run to lead by 25 with 15:19 left on the clock. Scores were few and far between for the next several minutes with TC outscoring BPC just 5-4 within five minutes of action, holding a 48-24 lead. Both teams split scoring for the next few minutes at 9-9 before Talladega picked up a big threepointer to lead 57-33 with 6:50 left on the clock. BPC went on a 12-4 run in the next three minutes to pull the deficit down to 16 but Talladega closed the frame out with a 7-2 run to solidify the lead and capture the 68-47 win. Chance Hatcher led the scoring for BPC with 15 points while Floyd Davis led the rebounding efforts with 11. As a team, BPC shot for just 28.3% (15-of-53) from the field, 21.1% (4-of-19) from three, and 76.5% (13-of-17) from the free-throw line. Talladega outrebounded the Barons 4233. The bench for Talladega produced 34 points while BPC’s produced 17. The Tornadoes scored 19 points off 13 turnovers from the Barons with BPC scoring 13 off 10 turnovers from TC.
Women vs. Mountain
The Lady Baron had another SSAC matchup on Thursday against Blue Mountain (Miss.) in Gillis Gym. The Lady Barons (9-6, 3-4 SSAC) landed short against the Toppers (8-7, 2-4) with second-half misfortunes.
“Blue Mountain outplayed us as well as outcoached us,” Head Coach Steve Edwards said. “They deserve a lot of credit for the way they played tonight.'
“We weren’t ready to play in the second half and that is on me,” Edwards added. “We need to bring consistent effort each night to win in our league. We will be better moving forward.”
After an opening backand- forth, BPC opened the game with an early four-point lead. Blue Mountain managed to pull back the deficit and claim their first lead of the game at the 6:13 mark of the first quarter. The next few minutes included both teams trading scores and flipping leads. BPC jumped to a three-point lead with 3:53 to play before BMC answered with a three-pointer to level at 12-12. Shortly after, the Lady Barons moved to a sixpoint lead, leaving 1:36 on the clock. The quarter closed with a bucket from BPC and a last chance score from Blue Mountain to make BPC’s lead 20-16 after the first 10 minutes of play. BPC gathered back-toback buckets to open the second quarter, advancing the lead to eight points. Blue Mountain knocked down the deficit back to four points before BPC went on a 11-5 run, pulling away to a double-digit lead with four minutes to play in the half. BPC closed out the half with a 46-33 lead. The Lady Barons outscored the Toppers 26-17 in the second quarter. The tables began to turn early in the second half as Blue Mountain started finding a rhythm on the scoring front. The Toppers began chipping away at the deficit with six minutes to play. BMC went on a 13-2 run in roughly three minutes of action, pulling the deficit down to just one point. BPC was able to recover from some of the damage in the final minutes of the quarter, closing out with a sevenpoint lead.
In the opening four minutes of the fourth quarter, Blue Mountain went on an 11-2 run to reclaim the lead with six minutes left to play. BPC answered with a jumper to level the game, but BMC was able to respond to regather the lead. The Lady Barons managed to level the game once more at 67-67 but landed short in the comeback efforts.
Blue Mountain closed out the fourth quarter, outscoring BPC 10-8 in the final three minutes of play. The Lady Barons had several chances of leveling or even reclaiming the lead but were unfortunate with the results as the Toppers held on for the 77-75 win.
Angel McRae was the lone BPC student-athlete with double-digit points with 15 while the trio of Keonya Mincey, Madison Evans, and Tajah’nae Wiggins notched nine points apiece. Wiggins also led the rebounding efforts with 10 boards on the night. The Lady Barons were able to outrebound the Toppers 48-41. Evans also led the BPC offense with six assists on the night. As a team, BPC shot for 39.5% (32-of-81) from the field, 13.6% (3-of-22) from three, and 47.1% (8of-17) from the free-throw line. Blue Mountain notched four players in double figures. BPC now moves to 5-7 against the Toppers all-time.
Men vs. Mountain
BPC Men’s Basketball earned its first SSAC season win of the season on Thursday night against Blue Mountain. The Barons (2-18, 1-7 SSAC) topped the Toppers (9-6, 2-5 SSAC) 70-66 in Gillis Gym. After a tough start to the 2021-22 season that has been filled with adversity, BPC found winning ways again after 73 days since the last victory back in November. Interim Head Coach Karim Mawuenyega was given the reins of the program with the assistance of Rodney Jackson to lead the program for the remainder of the season. Thursday night’s win marks Mawuenyega’s first collegiate win as a head coach. “I would like to thank everyone for the support that has been shown to our program this year,” Mawuenyega said. “The energy was great tonight, and we look forward to building upon it for the rest of the season.” Blue Mountain opened the game with a jumper to lead by two, but Chance Hatcher answered to level the score for the Barons just moments later. BPC followed with three-consecutive scores to lead by seven with 14:33 left in the first half. After a BMC score, TJ Taylor notched back-to-back buckets to move the Barons to a 13-4 lead. Blue Mountain pulled the deficit down to just three after an 8-2 run. However, BPC responded with nine points to boost the lead to 24-12 with just over eight minutes left to play. Blue Mountain was able to regain some moment towards the backend of the half, outscoring BPC 15-7 in the final minutes. The Barons were able to remain in control of the scoreline at the break, leading 31-27 Cameron Cherry opened the second half with seven points in the first three minutes to give BPC an 11-point lead. BPC was able to pull away to 12 points twice in the second half while nearing the halfway point.
Blue Mountain did not give up in the fight, chipping away at the Barons lead. BPC’s double-digit lead began to diminish as the Toppers found a way to pull the deficit to five points with just over nine minutes remaining.
Despite the tough efforts from Blue Mountain, BPC was able to hold on late down the stretch. The Toppers had their eyes set on a comeback, but they were only able to knock the deficit down to two points with the Barons closing out with the 70-66 lead.
A trio of Barons scored double-digit points on the night with Griffin Cherry leading the charge with 15 points. Taylor gathered 13 with Cameron Cherry picking up 12. Chance Hatcher led the way off the glass with eight boards followed by Bryce Wilson with six. As a team, BPC shot for 38.3% from the field (23-of-60), 32% (8of-25) from three, and 84.2% (16-of-19) from the charity stripe.
The Toppers outrebounded the Barons 3130 on the night and gave up 15 turnovers while BPC lost just nine. BPC led 10-7 in steals as well. BPC’s bench produced big tonight, outscoring Blue Mountain 28-7 coming from the sideline. BPC led 12-4 in assists with Taylor leading the way with four. The Toppers notched six blocks as a team with a trio of players gathering two apiece. Three BMC players notched double-digit points with Ty Jones leading with 25.
