Lady Barons Split With Columbia

The Brewton-Parker College softball program began their season with a doubleheader against Columbia (S.C.) on Wednesday afternoon last week.

The Lady Barons (1-1) split with the Koalas (3-1) with a 4-2 win in game one and a 4-2 loss in game two.

Game 1

Brewton-Parker opened the scoring in the bottom of the opening inning with two runs. With Ashley Wilson and MacKenzie Tripp scoring. The Lady Barons picked up the two runs on two hits and an error while also leaving one on base. Columbia was held to two hits and left three on base in the top of the second. BPC could only find a single from Erika Yatabe and left one on. The Koalas gained one run back in the top of the third with three hits. Both the fourth and fifth innings resulted in scoreless efforts until the Lady Barons added two runs in the sixth. Abbey Flowers knocked out a homer over the left-field fence while Leah Henry crossed home as a pinchrunner. Columbia found one run in the top of the seventh, but Brewton-Parker shut the door quickly to secure the first win of the season.

Flowers and Yatabe led the batting efforts with two hits apiece as BPC notched a team total of nine. Flowers also led with two RBIs with four individuals recording runs. Alexia Mays and Tripp picked up a stolen base each with Josalin Whitten, Wilson, and Flowers gathering a double apiece. Natalie Hardy pitched for all seven innings, giving up the two runs on 11 hits while striking out three batters on 32 at-bats.

Game 2

After a scoreless first inning, Brewton-Parker found themselves in the driver’s seat early with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Olivia Whitt and Madisen Nelson gathered BPC’s only two runs of the game.

The third, fourth, and fifth innings resulted in scoreless efforts from both sides until the Koalas’ bats warmed up with four runs on four hits. Columbia sealed the win holding BPC scoreless in both the sixth and seventh innings.

The Lady Barons recorded seven hits with the two runs. Abby Cox drove in two RBIs while Whitt led with two hits. BryAnn Pound picked up a stolen base. Brewton-Parker left a total of seven runners on base for the game. Laykin Brown pitched for all seven innings, giving up eight hits and striking out two batters on 29 at-bats.
