Toombs Sweeps The Pirates Of Appling

The Toombs County High School Bulldogs basketball team took on Appling County on Thursday of last week. The boys also faced off against Wheeler County on Tuesday.

Boys vs. Wheeler

Wheeler County was up 7-6 early in the game and had pushed that lead to 18-11 by the end of the first quarter. With 6:40 left in the first half Wheeler had gone ahead 25-13 on Toombs. It was 31-16 with just a few minutes left in the half, but Toombs went on a run with Jesus Quintero on a fast break, and a three-pointer by Dominic Eason closed the lead to 31-27. A three from Maleke Day made it 31-31, but at the end of the first half the score was 35-31 with Wheeler in front. In the third quarter of the game Toombs tied it at 41-41 with a three from Day, and Toombs kept pace with the score heading to the fourth at 51-47. In the fourth Wheeler was up 54-49, but a three-pointer from DJ McKinney made it 54- 52.

It was 62-59 as time was winding down in the game with Wheeler holding a small lead. Over the last couple of minute Wheeler pulled away to take the win over Toombs 68-61.

TCHS was led by Day with 21 points, Eason added 14, and McKinney scored 10 in the loss.

Girls vs. Appling

In the girls game Toombs was holding onto a small 19-18 lead at halftime over the Lady Pirates. Early in the second half Appling took a 21-19 lead over Toombs, but a basket by Aniyah Mckinnon tied the game at 21-21. She put TCHS up 24-23 with four minutes to go in the third quarter.

KayKay Mobley gave TCHS a 28-26 lead, but a three by Appling gave them a 29-28 lead with just under one minute left in the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs kept fighting and came away with the win, 47-40 over Appling.

Boys vs. Appling

The TCHS boys jumped out in the first quarter of the game on the Pirates and were on top 22-11 at the end of the first. In the second quarter Toombs remained on top and were up 32-22 at halftime.

Toombs maintained their lead as they were up 47-35 going to the fourth, and the Bulldogs went on to win the game Toombs was led by McKinney with 19 points, and Eason and Jamie Wardlaw each scored 10 in the game. This week as part of the Region 2AA Tournament the Lady Bulldogs took on East Laurens and the boys faced Bacon County on Monday of this week. If the girls win that game, they would have faced Vidalia on Tuesday after presstime. If the boys won their game on Monday, they then would have faced Swainsboro on Tuesday after presstime.
