The Vidalia Police Department and Toombs-Montgomery Emergency Management Services responded to a dispatch call regarding a child falling out of a vehicle on Monday morning. According to VPD Investigator John Humphrey and Officer Scott Howard, a mother was traveling westbound on Highway 292 when she slowed down to make a left turn onto Grand Street near J.D. Dickerson Primary School. As the mother was making the turn, a one-year-old child fell out of the vehicle onto the pavement. The event was witnessed by a concerned citizen, who immediately rushed over to the child and helped care for it until paramedics arrived. Both the mother and the citizen were interviewed by police in the investigation. The mother stated that the child had previously been able to free himself from his restraints and had fallen out of the vehicle, which is what occurred in this instance. The other instances were much more minor, according to the mother, who was stunned by this event. The child was taken to the hospital to be checked out, but is expected to make a full recovery.

“Luckily, he only had a few small abrasions on the side of his head; it could have been much worse,” Officer Howard commented. “I have been told he is doing well at the hospital and is responsive and coherent.”

Investigator Humphrey also spoke on the case. “Apparently, it is just an incident of a kid unbuckling himself and getting out the car,” he explained. “We are grateful to be able to respond and evaluate the situation, as well as to get proper care for the child. We are also very grateful the young boy was not hurt worse.”
