Mr. Gilbert McDaniel
Mr. Gilbert E. McDaniel, (USNR), age 70, of Mt. Vernon, died on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah after an extended illness.
Mr. McDaniel was born in Reidsville, grew up in Soperton, and was a 1970 graduate of Treutlen County High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he spent 7 years, and later transitioned to the U.S. Navy, where he retired as a Chief Petty Officer with a combined 23 years of service, receiving numerous awards and commendations. After his military career, he taught Navy Junior ROTC at Hilton Head High School in Hilton Head, SC, for 7 years, worked with the Department of Juvenile Justice in McRae-Helena for 10 years, and more recently was a 911 Dispatcher with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. He served on the Montgomery County Tax Equalization Board and was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Elmo Mc-Daniel and Gloria Kight; his stepmother, Stella Mc- Daniel; his brother, Ricky McDaniel; and 1 sister, Lucy McDaniel Dalby.
His family includes his wife of 44 years, Gail Richardson McDaniel of Mt. Vernon; 3 children, Lori Griggers Swails and husband Chris of Hamlet, NC, Marti Griggers Loy and Keith Loy of Smyrna, TN, and Mark McDaniel and wife Nikki of Mt. Vernon; 4 sisters, Lawana Newsome and husband Dwight of Vidalia, Sue Cauley and husband Dan of Soperton, Lisa Phillips and husband William of Wrightsville, and Christy Brinson and husband Davis of Tarrytown; 6 grandchildren, Drew Swails, Josh Swails, Ellington Loy, Gabby Nelms, Blakely Loy, & Gemma Mc-Daniel; 1 great-grandson, Carson Swails; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends.
The funeral service was held on Friday, March 11, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home, with Pastor B.L. Horne and Pastor Karl Hay officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors.
Pallbearers were Mark McDaniel, Salvador Hutchinson, Ryan Chin, Bryan Buxser, Justin Bell, and Freddie Brannen.
Honorary pallbearers were Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Mt. Vernon Police Department.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 610 Church St., Mt. Vernon, GA 30445.
