BPC Spoils Sweep By No. 14 Faulkner

Brewton-Parker wrapped up the weekend road series at No. 14-ranked Faulkner (Ala.) on Saturday afternoon.

The Barons (18-26, 11-10 SSAC) split Saturday’s doubleheader against the Eagles (29-13, 18-3 SSAC) with a 9-5 loss in game one and an 8-7 stunner in game two.

Game 1

In the seven-inning contest, Faulkner’s fourth-inning surge ultimately was the deciding factor in the defeat over the Barons. The Eagles struck first in the second inning with an early 1-0 lead on just one hit. Brewton-Parker would jump out to a 3-1 lead during the top of the third inning by taking care of three hits and utilizing an error from Faulkner. Three singles from Taz Worrell, Jordan Rahn, and Eduardo Castillo helped produced the three runs which also left two runners behind at the inning’s end. Faulkner responded with two runs during the bottom half of the inning to level the score. However, the Barons reclaimed the lead with a solo score on three base hits from Jacob Mantooth, Worrell, and Rudolph to lead 4-3 in the fourth inning. The Eagles quickly thwarted the Barons’ lead by scoring five runs on five hits to lead 8-4 after four innings of action. With a scoreless fifth inning coming to pass, Faulkner added one final run to the tally from a solo homer over the leftfield wall to lead by five runs. Brewton-Parker managed to score a run in the seventh inning, but it was just too late for the Barons to mount a comeback effort after producing just two hits as well as leaving a runner on base. Brewton-Parker outhit Faulkner 12-9 with Worrell leading the Barons with three hits followed by Rahn and Castillo with two each. Castillo also led with two RBIs. Defensively, Jackson Smith recorded eight putouts followed by Castillo with six. Ty Cook pitched for all six innings of action for BPC. He gave up eight earned runs on nine hits while striking out nine batters in the process.

Game 2

Game two ended in stunning fashion as Brewton- Parker exploded for six runs in the ninth inning to win by a run over the Eagles. The Barons took control of the score in the first inning with one hit from Matt Collins and a run scored from Rudolph. The second, third, and fourth innings would result in scoreless efforts for both teams before the Barons managed to take a two-run lead in the fifth inning. After a leadoff single from Malik Germany, Mantooth followed with an RBI single to score Germany. Faulkner produced three hits and four runs to claim the lead. The Eagles left two runners in scoring position as the inning ended but jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the sixth inning, scoring three additional runs on a pair of hits. After two scoreless innings, BPC had just three outs left to play. Ethan Frasca reached base after being hit by a pitch. Worrell connected for a one-out single to push Frasca to second before Caleb Gepfer recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. With two outs, Collins was walked which loaded the bases before Austin Mealor reached on a walk to bring home Worrell. Zachary Wilson was then walked to score a run which was followed by Castillo being hit by a pitch to score another run. The Barons were just two runs away from leveling the game with two outs on the board.

Germany then connected for a two-RBI single to center field bringing home Chase Howze and Mealor to tie the game. Frasca was then walked again to load the bases before Mantooth singled up the middle to bring home the go-ahead run.

The Barons were able to hold on to the 8-7 lead after walking two Faulkner batters during the bottom of the ninth, spoiling the Eagles’ chance at a sweep.

Brewton-Parker outhit Faulkner 9-7 with Mantooth leading the Barons with three hits followed by Worrell and Germany with a pair of hits each. Both Germany and Mantooth recorded two RBIs each. Eight individual Barons recorded a run each.

Defensively, Castillo recorded 11 putouts. Three pitchers made an appearance on the mound for Brewton-Parker. Chandler Koerner recorded the start, throwing for 4.1 innings. He gave up five hits and four runs while striking out five batters and walking three.

Mackenzie McDowell made a brief appearance, throwing for an inning and giving up two earned runs. Trey Jones closed out the game, throwing for 3.2 innings and earning the win. He struck out six batters and walked four while allowing just one hit. Next Up Brewton-Parker closes out the regular season with a home series against Loyola (La.) beginning Thursday of this week.
