The Toombs County Senior Center, located at 107 Old Airport Rd. in Vidalia, has received a huge makeover, and will host the public for a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, May 25, at 4 p.m. to allow everyone to see the changes that have been made. Toombs County Action Pact and Senior Center Coordinator Pam Fountain says that the new facility will bring a lot more activity to the location for all the area seniors to enjoy. “We’re out with the old and in with the new!” Fountain emphasized. “The Toombs County Senior Center is starting a new beginning. We upgraded the dining hall, patio, and even added an internet café for the seniors.”
She added, “I have to thank Georgia Power for their help in making this possible. They contributed to fundraising for the remodel and internet café construction by sponsoring a golf tournament and donating the proceeds.”
These seniors broke in the new Internet café with a computer class on Wednesday, May 11. This class was taught by a Fort Valley State University instructor and gave the seniors the basic knowledge needed to begin their enjoyment of the facility. “It was a great day, and I really believe the seniors enjoyed it,” Fountain commented.
She shared that in addition to this Internet café, the Center is already beginning to plan more activities in their revitalized space, such as monthly bingo and even Tai Chi classes. “In the future, we will be hosting an afternoon community bingo event once a month. We will have a Tai Chi class coming up toward the end of the summer,” Fountain explained. “We are trying to add more activities and are open to bringing in book clubs, bridge club, or any other activities which these individuals, who are around age 60 and older, can enjoy.” For more information on the Senior Center or to help in the installment of a new activity to the facility, contact Fountain at (912) 537-0453.
