On Thursday, the Toombs County High School Cross Country teams traveled to Hazlehurst to take part in the Southern Championships, one of the largest races in the South. The runners ran well for both groups, with several runners posting PRs.
Boys
The boys were led by Freshman Moises Young, who ran a PR of 21:42. Just behind Young was Augustine Cruz, again with a PR of 21:51. Kenneth Perez finished 3rd, with a personal season best of 22:02. Reggie Villa and Daniel Santoyo rounded out the top 5 for the guys.
Girls
On the girl’s side, Freshman Mareli Luna posted a time of 24:28, followed closely by Sophomore Bryleigh Woods, who ran a PR time of 24:57. Rebecca Parra ran her fastest race of the year with a 29:56, and Josseline Zamorano also ran her fastest race of the season with a 31:26, which was just a few seconds off of her PR time.
MS
In the Middle School competition, Toombs had another great race day with lots of PRs again. They are making improvements each week and seeing their hard work each day at practice paying off. Their top-place finishers were Juan Luna with 1st place and Dalton Kight with 7th place out of 167 runners.
Coach Jeremy Moore said, “We had a really strong day at the meet. When we have multiple kids runnings PRs, you feel good about the way we are running as a team. The boys lowered their team average by over a minute in this race, which is huge. We are still chasing some of the stronger teams in our region, but dropping our time by a minute is definitely closing the gap, and that is encouraging.
On the girl’s side, we have been running with only 4 girls for the last few races due to an injury, so we are not able to get an accurate gauge on our team time, but we are hoping to get our 5th runner back at our home meet next week. The girls are working hard each day and running well. every one of them has been dropping their time, and we are certainly hoping that continues on our home course next week.”
