VHS Finishes 3rd In Region
The Vidalia High School Indians softball team took on Brantley County’s Blue Herons in a double header in Nahunta on Tuesday of last week in the final regular season games of the season. The matchup was to determine the #2 and #3 seed coming out of Region 3AA. VHS needed to sweep the Herons to take 2nd place from them but were not able to do so as the teams split the two games with Brantley winning the first and VHS taking the second.
Game 1
In the first game of the double header neither team scored a run over the first four innings of the game. Tymber Harris had 11 strikeouts over those four innings, but in the bottom of the fifth inning Brantley got two walks and a bunt that loaded the bases with no outs. Another walk put the first run on the board, and then a single brought in two more runs to put the Herons on top 3-0. Another single made it 4-0 before the Indians could get the third out.
In the top of the sixth inning the Indians went three-up, three-down. In the bottom of the sixth Brantley got a runner on base, but she was thrown out stealing by Tori Wright. Harris then got her 12th strikeout of the game for the third out of the inning.
VHS couldn’t put anything together in the top of the seventh inning as the Herons won the first game 4-0 to secure second place in the Region.
Game 2
In the second game VHS got the bats going as they took the win from the Herons. VHS had two runners on base in the first inning but could not get them across. Brantley took the lead on a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the frame to take a 1-0 lead. Madison Starr was in the circle and shut them down after that to send the game to the second inning with VHS trailing 1-0. Aidyn Driggers tied the game at 1-1 with a home run off the scoreboard in left field for the Indians in the top of the second inning. That was followed by a double and a single that put runners at the corners. Shayla Bennett came through with a hit to put VHS on top 2-1. VHS then loaded the bases and Lydia Smith drove in two more runs to put VHS up 4-1. Gabby Royal scored on a hit by Starr to make it 5-1 heading to the bottom of the second inning.
Brantley made it 5-2 in the second off a couple of VHS errors, and then a hit closed it to 5-4. In the top of the third inning VHS added a run when Emma Humphrey scored on a hit by Deidra Boston for a 6-4 lead.
VHS added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning for an 8-4 lead over the Herons. Starr kept Brantley off the scoreboard over the next two innings as VHS got the win 8-4.
This week the Indians are taking part in the Super Regional at Jeff Davis High School. They took on Washington County on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. after presstime. If VHS wins that game, they will move on to face the winner of the Jeff Davis and Central Macon game at 7:00 p.m. Jeff Davis is the #1 team in the state with a 27-1 record. If VHS loses against Washington they will move into the losers’ bracket and play at 5:00 p.m.
