Brewton-Parker College women’s wrestling traveled north to Louisville, Kentucky, to compete in the NWCA National Duals as well as the NUWAY College Women’s Open over the weekend. Brewton- Parker men’s wrestling traveled south to take on AAC opponent St. Thomas (Fla.) as well as NCAA DIII opponent John Carroll (Ohio) in a tri-dual in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Women
The No. 16-ranked Lady Barons now hold a 13-7 duals record for the 2022-23 campaign, producing a 2-3 record in the two-day event to place them 10th in the NAIA division. In addition to the team performance, a pair of Lady Barons competed individually in the open tournament.
#16 BPC vs #5 Menlo – L, 42-4 In the first dual on Friday afternoon, Brewton-Parker took on No. 5 Menlo (Calif.) in a 42-4 loss. The highlight of that dual was an 8-1 decision win from Alyssa Valdivia (109) over No. 9-ranked Barbara Greenberg. Menlo downed the Lady Barons with five pins and four tech falls. #16 BPC vs #12 Missouri Baptist – W, 28-18 Brewton-Parker bounced back with a 28-18 win over No. 12 Missouri Baptist in the second meeting of the season between the two programs. Valdivia (109), Alesandra Burgos (123), Katelyn Lewis (170), and Karla Roman (191) all produced pins for BPC while Leidaly Rivera (136) and India Page (155) notched tech falls. BPC is now 2-0 against the Spartans this season.
#16 BPC vs #5 Providence – L, 32-16
On Saturday morning, Brewton-Parker took on the No. 5 ranked Providence (Mont.) and fell 32-16. After falling in the first four matches, BPC managed to get on the board with Madisyn Blackburn’s (130) pin over the No. 15 Gabbie Parini. Jorie Richardson (136) followed with a tight 1413 decision in her match while Page (155) also captured a decision (3-1) over 6thranked Sadie Antoque. Lewis (170) wrapped up the dual with a pin in her match.
#16 BPC vs #18 Baker – W, 29-16 The Lady Barons responded with a win over No. 18 Baker (Kan.) in a 29-16 victory. Gabriela Galvez (101) opened things up with a pin against No. 20 Kylie Hernandez with Valdivia (109) following with a 10-0 tech fall. Baker answered with a decision and two-straight tech falls before Rivera (136) picked up a 12-2 tech fall over the 17th-ranked wrestler in her weight class. Migdalys Ramos (143) and Lewis (170) both notched pins in their matches with Roman closing out with a forfeit win. #16 BPC vs #10 Central Methodist – L, 23-22 Closing out the weekend, BPC faced No. 10 Central Methodist (Mo.) in the final dual of the tournament. The Lady Barons fell in a tight 23-22 loss. After an opening forfeit win at 101, Brewton-Parker led early as Valdivia (109) pinned No. 15 Victoria Nunez. Burgos (123) snuck away in a 2-2 decision, winning by a tiebreaker over the 15th-ranked wrestler at 123. Ramos (143) also picked up a decision (4-0) just before Page (155) fell in a close 1-1 decision. Lewis (170) closed out the tourney with a fall.
Individual Open Performances Sierra Hartfelder and Josselinne Campos competed in the NUWAY open and both earned top-five placements in their respective divisions. For Hartfelder (143), she finished the open with a 2-2 record and 13.5 points, earning fourth place in her weight class. She gathered a pin in the quarterfinals as well as a pin in the consolation semifinals. As for Campos (170), she wrapped up the open with a 2-2 record. round and a pin in the fifth round, landing third in her weight class with 11 points.
Brewton-Parker hosts NCAA Division I opponent Presbyterian (S.C.) on Friday, Jan. 13 in Gillis Gymnasium.
Men BPC vs St. Thomas The Barons (3-10, 1-2 AAC) opened with a dual against the hosts, dropping to the Bobcats in a 39-5 loss. Zachary McFarland (125) started the dual with a 2-1 decision to give BPC a 3-0 lead. Ethan Larsen (197) picked up the Barons’ last three points with a 7-6 decision.
BPC gave up 18 team points with forfeits at 141, 165, and 184. The Bobcats recorded a 17-1 tech fall against Domnik Medina (133) before notching a 16-2 major decision over Bradley Owens (149).
STU followed with a 12-2 major over Carlos Cruz (157) prior to producing a 7-2 decision over Dominic Martinez (174). The Bobcats closed out the dual with a pin (1:46) on Tevin Person (285) to win 39-5. Both teams lost a team point due to unsportsmanlike conduct, moving the final score to 395.
BPC vs John Carroll
In the dual against John Carroll, the Barons struggled to earn points in a 50-6 loss. The only team points were earned by way of a forfeit in the 125-lb match. The Blue Streaks also gathered free team points with a forfeit at 184.
John Carroll produced four pins against Brewton-Parker with Medina (133), Bryant Santiago (141), Kullum Irvin (157), and Person (285) all falling by pin. Owens (149) was downed by an 18-2 tech fall while Cruz (165) falling by a 16-0 tech fall. Martinez (174) dropped a 21-6 tech fall loss followed by a 15-0 tech fall over Larsen (197).
Brewton-Parker returns to the mat on Saturday, Jan. 14 at Montreat (N.C.) for an AAC tri-dual against the Cavaliers and Reinhardt (Ga.).
