TCHS Over Vidalia In Region Tournament
The Toombs County High School Bulldogs boys basketball team are into the State Playoffs with a thrilling win over Vidalia in the Region Tournament last week. Toombs lost their first game of the tournament to Tattnall County, but bounced back with a win as they held off the charging Indians late in the game. Toombs is now 20-8 on the season, and peaking at the right time. The girls also played in the Region Tournament but lost to Pierce County to end their season.
Girls vs. Pierce
The Lady Bulldogs struggled to get the offense going against the Lady Bears on Tuesday of last week. Toombs scored just 18 points in the game. Pierce took the win over TCHS 42-18 to end the Lady Bulldogs season with a record of 5-21.
Boys vs. Tattnall
It was a bad opening quarter for the Bulldogs that led to a Warrior win. Tattnall came out and took a 17-6 lead on Toombs in the first as the Bulldogs could not get their shots to fall. Toombs improved in the second quarter, but heading into halftime Tattnall was on top 38-25.
Tattnall extended their lead in the third quarter to 56-35, and took the win over Toombs 67- 52.
The loss moved the Bulldogs into the consolation bracket of the tournament where they met up with Vidalia.
Boys vs. Vidalia
Between the TCHS defense and the Indians miscues in the first half, the Bulldogs built up a solid lead by halftime. Toombs also struggled a bit on offense in the first half, but did enough hold the lead. The Bulldogs were on top 10-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs didn't allow Vidalia to score a single point in the second quarter of the game as they pushed their lead to 20-4 at halftime.
In the third Toombs was up 29-18 with just over three minutes left as the Indians had started to close the gap. Marion James made it 34-20 later in the period with a pair of free throws, and Dominic Eason added to the lead with a jumper from 12 feet. The score at the end of the third period was 42-26 after Mike Polke hit a shot just before the buzzer.
In the fourth quarter the Indians went on a run as they had closed the lead to 47-36, but Jesus Quintero answered with a three-pointer to make it 50-36. The Indians closed it to 50-43 with just a couple of minutes left in the game. With just 45 seconds left, the Indians made it a five-point game at 52-47. It was 53-50 with 10 seconds on the clock, but a slam by Eason sealed the win for the Bulldogs, 55-50.
This week the Bulldogs will take on the #4 ranked team in the state in Putnam County in their first round matchup. They will play at Putnam on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
