TCHS Takes 1 From Pirates

The Toombs County High School Bulldogs baseball team took on the Pirates of Applling County last week in a threegame Region series. The Pirates are the top team in Region 3AA at the moment, but the Bulldogs played them well and picked up a win in the second game of the week.

Game 1

On Tuesday, the Toombs County Bulldogs made the 30 minute trip south to Baxley to take on the Appling County Pirates in game one of a critical Region series.

Appling County got on the board in the first inning when a Pirate singled on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs. They added another run in the third inning to push the lead to 3-0. The Dawgs battled back in the fourth inning, however, to tie the game at 3-3. Unfortunately, in the bottom half of the inning, the Bulldogs gave up 6 runs to fall behind 9-3 and did not catch back up, losing the game 9-5.

Gavin Hall took the loss for Toombs. The pitcher allowed two hits and nine runs over three and a third innings, striking out three. Tucker Braddy came in relief and pitched 2 and 2/3 inning giving up one hit and zero runs. The freshmen pitcher struck out 2 pirates in his work.

Jesus Quintero was the guy at the plate for the Bulldogs going 2-for-3 to lead the Dawgs in hits. As a team, the Bulldogs outhit the Pirates in the game, seven hits to three hits.

Game 2

On Thursday, the Toombs County Bulldog Baseball team seized a victory in dramatic walk-off fashion, to defeat the Appling County Pirates in the bottom of the 12th inning.

In the bottom half of the 12th, Trayvone Harris led off with a single. This was followed by a double by Brantley Upshaw. Appling County then intentionally walked Wil Watts. This brought up Jesus Quintero, who hit a hard ground ball that resulted in a throwing error by the Pirates pitcher that scored Harris to give the Bulldogs the victory.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Toombs County struck out five, while Appling County pitchers sat down nine.

The Bulldogs captured the lead in the third inning when Dawson Brantley hit his first solo home run of the year. The Pirates evened things up at two in the top of the seventh inning when Mason Williamson singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.

Tucker Braddy took the win for Toombs. The righthander went four and twothirds innings, allowing zero runs on one hit. Lucas O’Conner started the game for the Dawgs and pitched well. The pitcher lasted seven and a third innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out five.

Toombs tallied seven hits on the day with Dawson Brantley and Trayvone Harris each having multiple hits for the Dawgs.

Game 3

On Friday afternoon, the Toombs County Bulldog Baseball team fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 9-0 loss to Appling County. This loss put the Bulldogs region record at 4-2.

In the game, the Pirates took the lead early on an error in the second inning and never looked back. The Bulldogs collected seven hits on the night but not scratch a run. Wil Watts and Trayvone Harris both managed multiple hits for the Dawgs. Harris and Watts each collected two hits to lead the team.

Harris took the loss for Toombs County. The righty surrendered four runs on two hits over three innings, striking out four.

This week the Bulldogs have an off Region week. They took on Jeff Davis on Monday and Tuesday after presstime. They face Emanuel County Institute on Wednesday of this week at 5:30 p.m. in Twin City. They will get back to Region play next week against rival Vidalia.
