She moved with her family to Treutlen County, her father’s birthplace, and graduated from school there. After attending Brewton Parker College in Mount Vernon, Mercer earned a degree in business administration from Georgia Southern College.
She and her husband, Thomas, a native of Wheeler County, have two children and six grandchildren. She has resided in Wheeler County since 1973 and is a member of Landsburg Methodist Church where she is assistant pianist.
