The Montgomery County 4-H Straight Shotz BB Team traveled to Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, Georgia on Friday, April 28, to compete in the Georgia 4-H Target Challenge Weekend State BB Match. The team was led by certified coaches Evelyn Carpenter and Anthony Powell, and safety coach Debbie Thigpen. Teen leader Landon Powell traveled with the team to assist coaches.

Team members competing at the state level were Jurdan Hudson, Italy Thornton, Ayla Hardeman, Landen Colson, Brayden Colson, and Jonas Carpenter. These team members qualified at the district match in April and were able to advance to state competition by shooting a combined score of 1550. All members are first year shooters, and the team ended the weekend by placing 35th out of 55 teams.

The goal of the Straight Shotz BB Team, and the Georgia 4-H Project SAFE program, is to teach valuable life skills through shooting sports. SAFE stands for shooting awareness, fun, and education. Students participating in SAFE programming “develop a sense of belonging, learn teamwork in a safe environment, and increase their concentration skills. Safety and the responsible use of firearms and archery equipment is a primary goal.”

Montgomery County 4-H appreciates the support of our volunteer coaches, parents, and community. Straight Shotz will resume practice in the fall, and sign up information will be released then. For more information on Project SAFE programs, contact your local extension office.
