The Vidalia High School Indians scored 29 first-half points Friday night in Nahunta as they cruised to a 29-7 win over the Brantley Co. Herons. For the 2nd week in a row, the Indians Special Teams came up with points; this time, it was for two touchdowns as Vidalia improved to 5-2 and 3-0 in Region 3AA. Friday night on a very wet field, the Indian’s offense struggled to make any ground against the Heron’s defense in the first quarter, totaling only 25 yards for the first twelve minutes. However, the special teams did come up big on the first Heron possession, as Alton Boyles picked off a fake punt attempt and returned it 55 yards for the first score of the night to make it 8-0 after a successful two-point try.
The Indian’s offensewould get untracked on their third possession of the night on a 29-yard pass from Jackson Berry to Antonio Barron, capping a 9-play 50-yard drive to make the score 14-0 after a missed PAT with 8:56 to go in the half.
The Indian’s special teams would get their second score of the night on the Heron’s next possession when the Brantley Co. punter mishandled a snap and had his punt attempt blocked and scooped up by Ronald Pointer for his 2nd TD off a blocked punt in as many weeks. Following a successful PAT by Adam Crutchfield, the Indians led 21-0 with 6:18 left in the half.
The Indians’ defense would then hold Brantley Co. to a three-andout, giving the Indian offense the ball back on their own 47-yard line. Three plays later, it was Berry with his second touchdown pass of the night, this time an 18-yarder to D.J. Wallace, who took it in for the score to make it 29-0 with 4:04 left in the half.
The Indian’s defense was solid throughout the first half, allowing the Herons just 42 total yards in the first 24 minutes of play, and allowed only one score on the night, a late 4th quarter score to make the final 29- 7.
This week, the Indians return home to face the number three team in the state in Appling County for Homecoming 2023. Kickoff from Buck Cravey Field is set for 7:30 p.m.
