Sen. Blake Tillery Announces Third Biennial Youth Legislator Scholarship Contest
Sen. Blake Tillery (R – Vidalia) has announced that the application window for his Third Youth Legislator Scholarship Contest will open on October 12 to any middle and high school students residing in Senate District 19. As part of the process, candidates will be asked to submit an essay on one of two prompts related to inspiring youth to get involved with the state government process before the November 20 deadline.
“With each new iteration of the contest I continue to be amazed by the ingenuity of our students,” Tillery said. “These bright, innovative minds have a unique way of approaching things and often offer insight about rural Georgia and the political sphere in ways that go past our general ways of thinking.” Tillery continued, “This is especially true when it comes to their needs, both during the current pandemic and beyond. I have no doubt the young residents of our area will be future leaders and drivers of growth and for that, I’m looking forward to reading their suggestions and finding ways we can get these students actively involved in the legislative process.”
The Youth Legislator Scholarship Contest is awarded biennially to public, private and homeschooled students based on their execution of the proposed essay subjects. This year, the topics are centralized around two main themes: one, their personal experiences during the COVID- 19 pandemic and two, what steps the state of Georgia should take to incentivize young individuals to stay in rural regions. The winners will be announced on January 22, 2021, with a first place prize of $250, a second place price of $150 and a third place prize of $100.
