Busy Week For Wheeler

Busy Week For Wheeler Busy Week For Wheeler

The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs came into the week as a 4-0 team, and were being touted across the state as the most improved team across all classifications. But it was a tough week as they faced off with Dublin, the defending AA State Champions on Tuesday and then hosted top 10 team Wilcox County on Saturday, losing both contests to fall to 4-2 on the year.

Wheeler vs. Dublin

It was all Irish on Tuesday in Dublin. The Irish got off to a fast start as they scored 21 points in the first quarter of the game to take the big early lead. They added four more touchdowns in the second quarter, with Wheeler putting one in the end zone, to lead 49-6 at the end of the first half.

In the third quarter Wheeler did find the end zone one more time, but it was two scores by the Irish as they took a 63-12 lead into the fourth.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter as Dublin got the win, 63-12.

Wheeler vs. Wilcox

The Patriots of Wilcox were coming off a big win in which they scored 35 points in the first quarter on Montgomery County the week before, but the Bulldog defense proved to be stout as they held Wilcox to just 7 points in the first half of the game. Wheeler put the first points on the board on a 33yard touchdown pass from Jacquez Kincy to Quinshad Edwards on a fourth-and-11 play. They did not get the point after but led 6-0 early in the second quarter. Wilcox got on the board with just over eight minutes to go in the first half, and added the extra point to take a 7-6 lead. As the first half worked on, both teams had some big plays but neither team found the end zone again. Wilcox began to get frustrated that they couldn't move the ball against the tough Wheeler defense. The Patriots began to get chippy on the field and started pushing, shoving, and doing a lot of talking.

Wheeler did have a big loss with about two minutes to go in the half as quarterback Kincy went out with a pulled muscle.

The score at the end of the first half was 7-6 with Wilcox just out in front.

At the start of the second half Wilcox received the ball to start the second half and got a big return as they broke free all the way to the Wheeler 3-yard line. A penalty moved them back to the 8, but on the next play the Patriots went in for a touchdown. They added the PAT for a 14-6 lead.

The second half was all Wilcox as they scored three more touchdowns and a field goal, while Wheeler found the end zone just one more time. The Patriots took the win, 38-14 over the Bulldogs to hand them their second loss of the week.

This week the Bulldogs will be at rival Treutlen County with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. in Soperton.
