Barons Baseball Finishes Series at Keiser with Pair of Seven-Inning Losses

With the weekend in West Palm Beach, Fla. coming to an end, Brewton- Parker Baseball was looking to close out the weekend road trip with a pair of wins on Saturday at Keiser (Fla.). Unfortunately, the Barons (0-4) slipped in both games against the Seahawks (40) in an 8-7 loss in the first contest and an 18-10 loss in the series finale.

Game 1

In game one, the Seahawks began with a solo homer and a run scored off a wild pitch to take a two-run lead in the bottom of the first. Brewton-Parker quickly erased the early deficit, scoring five runs in the top of the second.

Michael Son reached on a walk and Drew De-Masi singled to begin the advancement of base runners for BPC. After a strikeout, Jack Morris reached on a fielder’s choice which advanced Son before a wild pitch/ walk from Kendell Wade scored Son. Brandon Lawrence then boosted the Barons into the lead with a grand slam for a 5-2 advantage.

The Barons continued the offensive production in the third with a homer from Son for a 6-2 lead while also notching hits from Jacob Mantooth and Jack Morris. Keiser responded with an RBI double and an RBI single to cut the deficit to a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third.

Keiser was continuing to creep back into the game, gaining one more run back in the fourth inning with a solo homer to make the game 6-5. Brewton- Parker was held scoreless for the fifth and sixth innings while the Seahawks reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth.

The Seahawks leveled the game by taking advantage of a batter being hit by a pitch before a two-RBI single captured the lead 8-2. BPC utilized an error to get Kennard Dawson on in the seventh and advance Dawson on a single from Son to help spark some momentum. Caleb Strott was walked to load the bases before a sacrifice fly from Morris brought in Dawson for the seventh run of the game. Unfortunately, BPC was unable to level the game to force the game past the seventh inning.

Keiser led 9-8 in hits while also leading 7-6 in RBIs. Son led BPC with a home run, three hits, two runs, and an RBI. Lawrence notched four RBIs on the grand slam. Keiser gave up two errors while Brewton-Parker gave up one. Brandon Russell started on the bump and pitched for 3.2 innings, giving up five earned runs, six hits, and recording four strikeouts. Dakota Davis made an appearance for 1.1 innings before Carlos Rodriguez (L, 0-1) finished the final inning, and gave up three earned runs while striking out three in the process.

Game 2

Brewton-Parker came out swinging in the second game of the day with a heavy 7-0 punch in the first two innings, scoring five runs in the first and two in the top of the second. Son notched an RBI single, followed by a De-Masi single that scored a pair. BPC took advantage of a fielding error to score the final pair of runs for the 5-0 lead in the first.

In the top of the second, DeMasi barreled another two-RBI single to help advance Brewton-Parker to a 7-0 lead. The Barons’ lead was shortlived as Keiser erased the deficit and took a one-run lead, scoring eight in the bottom of the second.

The Seahawks produced two homers for three RBIs, a three-RBI double, an RBI single, and an RBI groundout for the eight runs scored in the second. After a scoreless third for BPC, Keiser took a huge step forward by scoring six more runs on three hits while leaving the bases loaded to take a 14-7 lead.

Tate Worrell notched an RBI single in the fourth inning to gain a run back, but Keiser added to the tally yet again in the bottom half of the inning. The Seahawks walked one run in and brought another in off a sacrifice fly to take a 16-8 lead. In the fifth, Dawson connected for a two-RBI single to left center to cut the BPC deficit down to six. After a scoreless sixth inning, Keiser added two more scores in the seventh inning with a homer and an RBI single to close out the game 18-10.

Keiser led 13-8 in hits and 17-8 in RBIs. DeMasi led BPC with three hits and four RBIs. Tate Worrell notched two hits and was one of three Barons with a pair of runs alongside Lawrence and Son. A total of eight pitchers made appearances for the Barons. Chandler Koerner earned the start, tossed for 1.2 innings, and gave up seven earned runs on five hits and three walks. Robin Have (L, 0-1) received the loss in a very brief stint on the mound. Davis led with the longest time on the mound, pitching for 2.1 innings and giving up one hit while walking one and striking out one as well.

BPC will return to Mount Vernon for the home opener on Friday, Feb. 2, against Middle Georgia at 3:00 p.m. ET.
