Wheeler Splits Games

The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs basketball teams took on Jeff Davis on Monday of last week and then were at Telfair County on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs dropped both of their games, while the boys took a win from the Yellow Jackets of Jeff Davis.

Girls vs. Jeff Davis

It was a tough loss for the Lady Bulldogs as they couldn’t hold off the Lady Jackets late in the game. Wheeler jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the first quarter of the game, but in the second JD came storming back to take a 22-18 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs doubled up the Jackets as they outscored them 16-8 to take a 34-30 lead into the fourth quarter. But in the fourth, Jeff Davis did just enough to take the win, 52-50, over Wheeler.

Nikita James had another huge game for the Lady Bulldogs as she scored 38 points in the game to lead Wheeler.

Boys vs. Jeff Davis

In the boys’ game, Jeff Davis held a slim 9-8 lead a the end of the first quarter of the game. In the second they extended that lead to 24-15.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs outscored the Jackets 21-8 as they jumped out in front, 3632. Wheeler held off the Jackets in the fourth quarter to take the win, 52-47.

Girls vs. Telfair

In the girls’ game against the Lady Trojans, Tefair was out to a 10-6 lead in the first quarter of the game, and in the second they pushed that lead to 32-17.

Wheeler came back in the third quarter to close the lead to 40-32, but Telfair held on to get the win, 50-43.

James led the way for Wheeler with 26 points and Shiann Carey added 10 points in the loss.

Boys vs. Telfair

The boys’ game was tied at 5-5 early on, and Wheeler took the lead 8-7 later in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Trojans were on top 1612, but a three-pointer from Wheeler closed it to 16-15 before the end of the first half.

In the third quarter, Telfair was on top 22-19. They extended that lead to 30-21. Wheeler closed the lead back to 30-27. In the fourth quarter Telfair was on top 41-37, but a steal from Wheeler made it 4139. Wheeler tied the game at 41-41, but they were not able to take the lead as Telfair took the win, 4542.

The Bulldogs are now 12-4 on the season and they are 4-3 in the Region sitting in second place behind Treutlen. The Lady Bulldogs are 1-15 on the year and are 1-6 in Region play. This week they hosted Bryan County on Tuesday after presstime. They will be back in action on Friday at Dooly County at 6:00 p.m., and then will be at Hawkinsville on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
