Low Turnout for Presidential Preference Primary
The polls did not see many voters throughout the recent Presidential Preference Primary, as election results have reported extremely low area-wide turnouts for the election.
Former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden will face off for a rematch in this year’s presidential election, as it was reported that both men had received the required number of electors to secure their spots as each party’s candidate on Tuesday, March 12.
In Toombs County, only 12.11% of the county’s registered voters cast their ballots for presidential preference, as a total of 1,894 votes were tallied – 864 of which were from Election Day. Only 48 absentee ballots were returned to the Board of Election and Registration, while 982 citizens took advantage of the opportunity to vote early.
Trump swept a majority of the Toombs County votes, earning a total of 1,563 of the 1,700 republican ballots. Nikki Haley was selected as the preference of 114 voters, while other candidates received less than 20 votes each.
Biden was the selection for 178 of the 192 Democratic ballots cast, as Marianne Williamson followed earning 11 votes and Dean Phillips received 3 votes.
Montgomery County saw similar results, as only 16.52% of the county’s registered voters participated in the election. Election Day was the most popular way to vote, as 499 citizens cast their ballots on March 12; 346 voters took advantage of early voting; and 23 absentee ballots were returned to the Board of Elections and Registration.
Over 94% of the Republican ballots cast were for Trump, as he received 697 votes, and Haley followed with 33 votes. Fewer than 10 ballots were also cast for Ron Desantis, Ryan Binkley, and Vivek Ramaswamy.
The Democratic ballots followed this same pattern, as Biden received 118 votes, which totaled 94.32% of the ballots, and Williamson and Phillips trailed with a combined total of 5 votes.
Only 504 of Wheeler County’s 3,212 registered voters turned out March 12 to cast ballots in the Presidential Preference Primary, according to the county’s Elections Supervisor Karen Mercer. Of this total, former President Trump amassed over triple the number of votes garnered by current President Biden. Trump claimed 374 votes and Biden pulled in 109 votes. Still, the turnout was lackluster with less than 16% percent of the county casting ballots even with three weeks of advance voting opportunities.
The Presidential Election will be held in November, as the nation decides who will lead them for the next four years.
