Cheryl A. Poppell will lead the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension's Southeast District as director. She will oversee all three Extension program areas — agriculture and natural resources, family and consumer sciences, and 4-H youth development — in 39 counties in the Southeast District.

Dr. Laura Perry Johnson, UGA Associate Dean for Extension, announced Poppell’s appointment to replace the role. Johnson states, “In addition to her career experience, Poppell has served in several state and national roles with professional associations as well as served as a mentor to countless extension faculty and staff.” The Southeast District has been without permanent leadership for almost two years. Poppell will bring stability to the position and is a well respected leader in the district, state and nation.

Poppell moves to the Southeast District Extension Director position after spending over twentythree years as the Toombs County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth and County Extension Coordinator. She began her UGA Extension career in 1999 as the Treutlen County Agent with a split appointment between Agriculture and 4-H Youth positions.

Dr. Johnson stated, “Cheryl is a dedicated public servant and we look forward to her leadership in Southeast District.” 'Serving in the Southeast District for the last 24 years has given me ample opportunity to understand the people and counties of the Southeast District. Throughout my career, I have observed some of the best as they led districts across Georgia. I have also benefited first hand from mentors and seasoned agents and administrators who have guided and assisted me along the way. I feel a deep sense of responsibility for those who are now in the same shoes I was some 20 years ago,” stated Poppell. “I look forward to contributing to the professional advancements of the agents and staff members with whom I'll be working.”

Poppell currently resides in Lyons with her husband Mike, who is a full-time Pastor at Victory Fellowship Church in Lyons, and three sons, James, Matt and Stephen.
