On Wednesday, July 10, the City of Lyons will commemorate the naming of the Southeast Georgia Soap Box Derby as Georgia’s official Soap Box Derby and send off three local winners to the International Soap Box Derby World Championships in Akron, Ohio.
On May 7, Governor Brian Kemp signed the bill which named the continued from page
Southeast Georgia Soap Box Derby as Georgia’s official soap box derby. This bill was sponsored by State Representative Leesa Hagan, who endorsed the Derby because of the mentorship, valuable life lessons, and fun that it brings to the community.
This new law will be celebrated during a 6:30 p.m. ceremony at Partin Park during which Representative Hagan, Southeast Georgia Soap Box Derby Committee Chairman Johnathan Gordy, Lyons Mayor Willis NeSmith, and a member of the Lyons Main Street Association will address the audience about the occasion. In addition to this, the event will serve as an enthusiastic send-off for Southeast Georgia Soap Box Derby Stock Winner Isaac Pickles, Super Stock Winner Taylor Copeland, and Masters Winner Alexis Head. These competitors will travel to Akron on July 14-20 to compete for national and international titles in the sport.
The July 10 event is free, and members of the public are encouraged to attend. As a special treat throughout the program, ice cream will be scooped up on-site and served to attendees.
