A man died at the scene of an accident on Friday, June 28, after being struck by a semi-truck hauling a flatbed trailer.

At 1:42 p.m. on Friday, emergency services were dispatched to the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 South and C.H. Slayton Road in the unincorporated area of Toombs County. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the semi-truck driven by Roberto Cabecera, 34, of North Carolina, parked on the shoulder of the northbound lane of the highway. William Michael Hadlock, 44, of Jesup, was lying in the center of the roadway. Cabecera was uninjured, but Hadlock sustained serious traumatic injuries, to which he succumbed at the accident site.

Based on the evidence and witness testimonies at the scene, authorities believe Cabecera was traveling northbound on Highway 1 while Hadlock was walking in the center of the southbound lane of the highway. While Cabecera was passing Hadlock, the pedestrian moved into the northbound lane, striking the side of the flatbed trailer.

In addition to this, several unconfirmed reports came in to the Toombs County 911 Dispatch Center stating that vehicles were having to avoid Hadlock as he tried to run out in front of them.

The accident is now being further investigated by the Georgia State Patrol Post 18 (Reidsville).
