The football and baseball fields at Wheeler County School will be getting new lights thanks to action taken by the Board of Education at its July 8 meeting.

The Board approved a contract with Musco Lighting to install LED lighting and metal poles at a total cost of $509,000. Graham Electric of Dublin will undertake the project, starting with the baseball field. The aging poles had to be replaced because of safety reasons, and the lighting was outdated and becoming obsolete, according to school officials.

The contract includes a 25-year warranty for the state-of-the-art lighting, with comes with show light capabilities. School officials expect the new lighting at the baseball field to be in place when the baseball season begins. Once the baseball field is completed, work will commence on the football field lighting.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Quent Floyd reported to the Board that playground drainage corrections at the school are scheduled to start this month. In its June 10 session, the Board approved going forward with a drainage project at the Wheeler County School playground area. The work will involve removing a portion of the sidewalk, installing a storm drain to connect to the current drainage system, installing a new concrete curb/flume, and replacing the sidewalk for a about $16,000.

After that work is complete, sod and irrigation will be installed on a sloped portion of the playground to assist with water retention and to prevent further issues with playground mulch washing and covering drains. This portion of the project is expected to cost $12,500. The work will be financed through the system’s capital projects fund. Personnel Recommendations

The Board approved recommendations to hire: • Lori White as a Wheeler County Elementary School teacher; • Danielle Lanier as the new middle and high school band director; • Myona Clemons, pending completion of Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE), as a Wheeler County High School teacher; • And, Summer Taylor and Gwuna Lewis as substitutes.

The Board will meet for its next session on Monday, August 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Board office in Alamo.
