Eagles Open Season With Win

The Montgomery County High School Eagles football team kicked off their 2024 season with a win over Baconton Charter last Friday night on the road. It was a big win under new Head Coach Kareem Hess.

MCHS was already up 6-0 early in the first quarter when a broken play led to a 75-yard pass for a touchdown. That put them on top 12-0 over Baconton.

In the second quarter, a 53-yard touchdown pass over the middle put MCHS up 18-0. They added the two-point conversion to take a 20-0 lead. Baconton went on the attack and scored the next two touchdowns of the game to close the lead to 20-13, but a 33-yard touchdown run from MCHS in the fourth quarter increased their lead to 26-13. They tacked on the extra point for a 27-13 lead.

Later in the fourth quarter, an 80-yard run led to the next score for MCHS. That put them on top 33-13. With the two-point conversion, MCHS led 35-13. They went on to win the game by that score.

MCHS had an offensive showing on Friday night as they had 420 total yards of offense. They had 255 yards in the air and 165 yards on the ground. Quarterback Eric White was 14-27 for 284 passing yards with three touchdowns, but he did throw three interceptions which will need to be cleaned up. Jaquez Kelly led the receivers with 128 yards. Jamun Coglin rushed for 83 yards on the night, and Elijah McEwen had 78 yards rushing.

Leading the defense was Charles Rogers who had 3 sacks, 3 QB hurries, 2 forced fumbles, a tackle for a loss and 3 other tackles in the win.

This week MCHS will host their home opener against Johnson County at 7:30 p.m. on Brogdon Field.
