Wheeler Softball Wins Region
It was a busy final week of the regular season for the Lady Bulldogs of Wheeler County High School. The softball team played four games, picking up three wins, as they finished off the year as the Region Champions. They have an overall record of 17-5 and were 9-1 in Region play.
Last week Wheeler faced off with Wilcox County on Monday, were at Telfair County on Wednesday, and then capped off the week with a double header against Clinch County on Thursday. vs. Wilcox
Wheeler took the lead in the second inning off an RBI single by Mackenzie Scott. They added another run in the top of the third inning when Anna Beth Ethredge drove in a run with an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
Wheeler scored two more runs in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth on the way to a 6-0 win over Wilcox. vs. Telfair
In the final Region game of the season, the Bulldogs rolled to a win over rival Telfair County. Wheeler put a run on the board in the top of the first inning on a ball hit by Gabby Angel, but in the bottom of the frame Telfair answered with two runs to jump out on top, 2-1.
Wheeler broke the game open in the top of the second inning with six more runs to take a 7-2 lead. Scott had the big hit in the inning as she came through with a 2-RBI double. Wheeler added a run in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth as they increased their lead to 9-2. Wheeler plated three more in the top of the sixth inning to push their lead to 12-2.
Telfair did get a 2-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but it was not enough as Wheeler took the win, 12-4. vs. Clinch Game 1 In the first game, the Bulldogs took the first lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead, but in the bottom of the frame, the Lady Panthers of Clinch put nine runs on the board to take a commanding lead.
Wheeler tried to fight their way back and almost pulled it off. They scored four runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to close the lead to 9-7. Wheeler added one more run in the seventh inning to make it 9-8, but they could not come up with the tying run as Clinch took the win, 9-8.
Game 2
The second game was all Wheeler as they pulled away to a run rule win. Clinch struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but in the top of the second inning, Mackenzie Johnson hit a 2-run home run to left field to give the Bulldogs the 2-1 lead.
Wheeler added five more runs in the fourth inning. Scott tripled to drive in a run, Ava Dixon drove in a run, Johnson came through with two more RBI's on a double, and Shelley Conner picked up a sacrifice fly as Wheeler extended their lead to 7-1.
Wheeler plated six more runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 13-1 win over Clinch.
This week the Lady Bulldogs will kick off the first round of the State Playoffs as they host Claxton on Wednesday in a best-ofthree series. They will play a double header on Wednesday beginning at 3:00 p.m. If necessary, they will play a third game on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
