Busy Week For VHS Softball
The Vidalia High School softball team played five games last week picking up wins in three of those contests. They started off the week with St. Vincent's on Tuesday, took on Appling County and West Laurens on Friday, and then faced Pierce County and the Academy for Classical Education on Saturday. The Friday and Saturday games were part of the Highway 280 Invitational. vs. St. Vincent's
VHS put 2 runs on the board in the top of the first inning. The first came off an error, and the second run crossed on an RBI single by Tori Polke. VHS added 2 more in the second on RBI doubles by Laylah Brantley and Gabby Royal to take a 4-0 lead over the Saints.
VHS plated 2 more runs in the sixth inning and 2 more it the top of the seventh to win the game by the score of 8-0. vs. Appling It was one big inning for the Lady Pirates of Appling that led to their run rule win over the Indians. Appling scored 16 runs in the top of the second inning on the way to an 18-0 victory of the Indians. vs. W. Laurens
On Friday evening the Indians took on the Lady Raiders of West Laurens. The Raiders plated 4 runs in the top of the third inning and then another continued from page
in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead over VHS.
They added 3 more in the fifth inning on the way to an 8-0 win. vs. Pierce
Lily Grace Maybin drove in 3 runs and Miya Howard, Paisley Ledford, and Elizabeth Sowell combined for 4 hits, as Vidalia defeated Pierce County 7-0 Saturday in Day 2 of the 280 Invitational.
The Indians opened the scoring in the first after Maybin grounded out, scoring 1 run.
Vidalia scored 5 runs in the second inning on the way to victory. Ledford singled, scoring 1 run, Brantley was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Royal hit a sacrifice fly, scoring 1 run, and Lilly Grace Maybin doubled, scoring 2 runs.
Addi Welch earned the win for Vidalia Varsity Indians. The pitcher gave up 3 hits and 0 runs over 7 innings, striking out 1 and walking 4. vs. ACE
The final game of the week for VHS was against ACE on Saturday afternoon.
ACE took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning, but 5 runs from VHS in the second put them on top. Ledford had the big hit in the inning with a 2-run double.
ACE added a run in the top of the third inning, but VHS answered in the bottom of the fourth to lead, 6-2. VHS added 2 more in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead. ACE came back with 4 runs in the top of the sixth inning, but VHS plated 1 more in the bottom of the frame on the way to a 9-6 victory.
Savannah Rushing and Brantley each homered as the Indians racked up 11 hits in a 9-6 win over the ACE Gryphons on Saturday to wrap up the 280 Invitational. Ledford and Elizabeth Sowell both had 2 hits, Deidra Boston, Royal, and Sadie Berry had 1 hit each. Anastyn Blewett got the win in the circle, allowing 11 hits in 5 2/3 inning with 6 strikeouts.
This week VHS took on Glascock County on Monday and Savannah Christian on Tuesday, both after presstime. They will be back in action on Thursday against Swainsboro at 6:00 p.m. on the road.
