Wheeler Wins High Scoring Game Over MCHS
It was a high scoring game last Thursday night as they Wheeler County High School Bulldogs took the win over the Montgomery County High School Eagles in Mt. Vernon. There were a total of 114 points racked up between the two teams and 1149 total yards of offense.
The Bulldogs struck first and took an 8-0 lead over MCHS. The Eagles answered with a 25-yard touchdown pass with four minutes left in the first quarter. They tacked on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 8-8.
Wheeler came back with another touchdown and two-point conversion to take a 16-8 lead over the Eagles, but again, MCHS answered on an 80-yard pass play with 9:30 left in the second quarter. They could not get the two-point try, and trailed 16-14 to the Bulldogs.
Wheeler quickly found the end zone again and took a 24-14 lead over MCHS. Montgomery connected on a 16-yard pass for their next touchdown with four minutes to play in the first half. That closed the lead to 2422.
In the third quarter the Bulldogs extended their lead to 32-22 on an 85-yard run by Alvin Ricks, but on the ensuing kickoff the Eagles broke free and returned the ball for a touchdown. That made the score 32-30 with 5:44 left in the third quarter.
Wheeler finally began to pull away from the Eagles over the remainder of the game and went on to take a 66-48 win.
Wheeler was led by Alvin Ricks who racked up 379 yards rushing with 6 touchdowns. Justin Culver added 153 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns.
The Eagles were led by Jayden Harris at quarterback with 244 yards passing with 6 touchdown, he added 77 yards rushing in the game as well. Jamun Coglin was the leading receiver with 141 yards and 2 touchdowns.
This week Wheeler County will host Telfair County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night.
The Eagles of Montgomery took on Treutlen County at home on Tuesday night in a makeup game after presstime. They will be back in action on Saturday at home against Hawkinsville at 1:00 p.m.
