MCHS Eagles Drop 2 Games
The Montgomery County High School Eagles football team played two games last week as they were trying to catch up after Hurricane Helene. They faced off with the Vikings of Treutlen County on Tuesday in Soperton and then were at home on Saturday against the Red Devils of Hawkinsville. MCHS lost both of those games as they fall to 2-6 on the season and 0-4 in Region play. vs. Treutlen
Treutlen took the early lead less than two minutes into the game on a 35-yard run by Roderick Fuller. They added a two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead over the Eagles.
The Eagles came back and tied the game at 8-8 with 4:37 left in the first quarter on a short run by Jay Harris, but another big run by Fuller from 27 yards out put the Vikings back on top, 14-0 with just over two minutes left in the first quarter. Then a big interception by Jordan Coney and an 85-yard return for a touchdown gave the Vikings a 20-8 lead.
With 2:20 left in the first half of the game, MCHS added a touchdown on a pass from Harris to Jaquez Kelly for 43 yards. The Eagles added the two-point conversion to close the lead to 20-16.
With just 19 seconds left in the half, Vikings quarterback Kylan Page found Coney for a 23-yard touchdown pass. That gave Treutlen a 26-16 lead at halftime.
Treutlen added to their lead with 1:30 left in the third quarter on a 5-yard run by Peanut Tobler. That put the Vikings on top, 32-16.
MCHS scored one more time with just 4:40 left in the game on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Harris to Jordyn Patterson. Jamun Coglin added the two-point conversion to make the score 32-24. MCHS did get another chance as the game was coming to an end, but the Vikings held on to take the win, 32-24. vs. Hawkinsville
The teams took to the field at 1:00 in the afternoon. Hawkinsville took a 6-0 lead on a 25-yard pass early in the second quarter of the game. They added to that lead on a short run with 3:43 left in the first half. They added the two-point conversion to take a 14-0 lead over the Eagles.
Just a few plays in to the next drive of the Eagles, a fumble gave the Devils the ball back inside MCHS territory. They scored just a few plays later on a 25-yard pass play to push their lead to 20-0 with 1:56 left in the half.
But on the last play of the first half, the Eagles scored on a pass from Harris to Cam Henderson. Coglin took the two-point conversion in to make the score 20-8 heading to halftime.
In the third quarter with 5:20 to go, Harris broke free for the Eagles on a 56-yard run for a touchdown. That closed the lead to 20-14.
But the Devils began to pull away and increased their lead to 32-14 by the midway point of the fourth quarter.
The Eagles did get a 75yard kickoff return for a touchdown with seven minutes left in the game to make the score 32-20, but the Devils scored one more time as they took the win over MCHS, 39-20.
This week the Eagles will have the week off before heading to Wilcox County next week.
