In a nail-biting conference showdown, the Brewton-Parker College Lady Barons basketball team defeated the Life University Running Eagles 75-72 at the Eagle's Nest on January 16. The victory brings the Lady Barons' season record to an even 9-9 overall, with a strong 5-2 in conference play. The Lady Barons bounced back on the road after a tough loss at home to the Mobile University Rams, showcasing the team's resilience as they prepare for the conference tournament.

The game was a back-and-forth, highoctane game that came down to the wire. By halftime, Brewton-Parker had carved out a slight lead, 34-30, setting the stage for an intense second half. Destanee Wright was the standout performer, racking up 27 points along with eight rebounds and four steals, helping to secure the win for her team. Chasity Degale also made significant contributions with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Jasmine Leynard added 10 points to the team's total. Angel McRae's defensive prowess was notable, cleaning up the glass with 11 rebounds and a steal.

Coach Steve Edwards expressed mixed feelings about the team's performance, noting the late-game energy dip but ultimately praising their resilience. 'Big win for our group tonight. We found a way to win a tough game on the road against a good team. I thought we were sluggish for most of the second half, and I didn't like our energy late. We really challenged our group late, and they responded. It's hard to win on the road, and we're proud of the way we closed tonight,' said Edwards.

Looking ahead, the Lady Barons prepare to host Loyola University (La.) on January 23, in Mount Vernon and William Carey University (Miss.) on January 25. These are two of the top three teams in the SSAC. Next weekend will provide an excellent test for the Lady Barons to determine where they are at and how they stack up against the best of the best in the SSAC.
