CONTEXT

A compilation of quotations on a variety of issues by national, state and regional writers, well-known personalities, just plain everyday people and from various publications collected by the editors of THE ADVANCE.

Quotes for our Times:

Matt Vespa, Senior Editor at Townhall.com: Trump fires immigration judges as border security becomes a top priority.

There’s a new sheriff in town on immigration. President Donald J. Trump will make and is expected to sign new executive orders that will declare a national emergency at our southern border and allow for the deployment of National Guard units to repel the illegal alien invasion we’ve been subjected to for the past four years.

One way to do that is to shore up the legal backbone by having quality immigration judges, which the president wasted no time in reshaping. He fired a slew of them today. Immigration judges are the gatekeepers to asylum requests.

Rob Natelson, retired constitutional law professor and constitutional historian: Bye-Bye Biden: The departure of America’s worst president.

Like nearly all deficient presidents, Biden served only one term. He is now mercifully gone. But his actions during his final days will cement his low rating.

Biden was unique among presidents in scoring poorly not just on one or two of the factors academics use for demoting chief executives, but on several: corruption, failure to enforce the law, executive ineptness, incapacity, divisiveness (or lack of moral leadership), and civil liberties violations.

Hugh Hewitt, conservative talk show host: Trump's second inaugural address was a triumph for him, and for his supporters.

The hallmark of the address was unapologetic pride in America, and patriots applaud such pride. That millions of deportations of criminal aliens are necessary is hardly debatable. That crime menaces millions of Americans is incontrovertible. President Trump’s promise to adopt bold policies to deal with both was the essence of the Trump-Vance campaign and the new Administration has a mandate to move forward with both programs.

And so much more. Honest observers will award Trump’s speech the highest number of stars in whatever system they are using for its directness. They should applaud its resolve.

And those who wish the Republic well will also applaud the unapologetically proud tenor of Trump’s Second Inaugural. American patriotism is back on full display. Bravo.

David Marcus, columnist and author: As Trump takes office, the forgotten American demands to be heard.

The truck drivers elected Donald Trump, the movers and construction workers elected him. They won’t be at the galas, they won’t get to hobnob with Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, who will sit at a dais at Trump’s beck and call.

And make no mistake, both those billionaires have bent the knee in a way no everyday worker in Brooklyn would, because the hardworking American never has to. They just show up at work, and then they, and only they, decide who wins elections.

Trump has a generational opportunity to make this country better for working men and women. I don’t think anybody doubts he wants that, or will fight for it, and that's cause for optimism.
