Bulldogs Are Region Champs


The Toombs County High School Bulldog basketball teams took part in the Region Tournament last week. The Lady Bulldogs fell in the first round to end their season, but the boys got a big upset over rival Vidalia in the semifinals and then went on to defeat Woodville-Tompkins in the Region Championship Game.
Girls vs. Swainsboro
Swainsboro jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter as they went on a run to take a 17-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. They added to that lead in the second, giving the Lady continued from page
Tigers a 30-10 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Swainsboro continued to pull away as they went on to win the game, 54-35.
Arianna Hill led TCHS with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Makayla Brewton added 10 points in the loss.
TCHS ended the season with a record of 6-17, and they were 4-9 in Region play.
Boys vs. Swainsboro
The boys also faced the Tigers in the first round of the tournament. Toombs fell behind in the first quarter with Swainsboro taking a 2011 lead. But in the second, Toombs closed the gap to 30-28.
In the third quarter, the Bulldogs took the lead and were up 48-42 heading to the fourth. Toombs held on in the fourth to win the game 65-61 to advance to the semifinals.
Mike Polke led the Bulldogs with 21 pionts, Gavin Fletcher added 20 points, and Parker Stanely posted 14 points in the win.
Boys vs. Vidalia
That set up the Bulldogs to face rival, and the #1 tournament seed, Vidalia for a chance to make it to the Championship Game. This was a close and low scoring game throughout with Toombs coming out on top by just two points.
Toombs was trailing in the first quarter, but went on a run to take the lead, and they were on top, 11-9, at the end of the period. In the second, the Bulldogs increased their lead to 2219 by the end of the first half.
In the third quarter, the Indians kept it close, but Toombs was clinging to a 32-30 lead heading to the fourth quarter. In the fourth, neither team could do much on offense as they each scored just six points, but with that, Toombs picked up the win, 38-36.
Fletcher led Toombs with 11 points, Stanley added 10, and Polke scored 9 in the win.
Boys vs. Woodville
That moved the Bulldogs into the Championship Game against the Wolverines of Woodville. Toombs took a 9-6 lead in the first quarter, and they held a 20-16 lead at halftime.
In the third, the Wolverines came storming back as they took the lead, and were on top, 39-32, heading to the fourth. But in the fourth, Toombs outscored the Wolverines, 22-10, as they came back and grabbed the win, and the Region Championship, 54- 49.
Toombs was led by Polke with 18 points, with Parker, Amari Eason, and Cornelius Bullard each scoring 8 points.
All Region
The Bulldogs had several players named to the Region 3 All Region Team. For the boys Gavin Fletcher was named to the First Team. On the Second Team is Mike Polke and Parker Stanley, and Honorable Mentions went to Tucker Braddy and Cornelius Bullard.
For the Lady Bulldogs, Arianna Hill was named to the All Region First Team. Brinley Miller and Kayla Brewton were named to the Second Team. Honorable Mentions went to Makenna Gardisser and Taylor Bland.
State Tournament
Toombs is now 15-11 on the season and will move into the State Tournament as the #5 seed. Toombs' first round game will be against #28 seeded Coosa on Wednesday in Lyons at 6:30 p.m. If they win that game they will play Saturday against the winner of the Gordon Central vs. Woodv i l l e -Tompkins game.
