LOCAL ATTRACTIONS — The Altama Museum of Art and History, housed in the historic Brazell House on Jackson Street in Vidalia, is among the sites that will be open during the Vidalia Onion Festival.

Several local attractions have once again been sanctioned by the Vidalia Onion Festival Committee and will offer special hours. They include: Ladson Genealogical Library The Ladson Genealogical Library is a genealogist’s paradise! With more than 30,000 books, pamphlets, manuscripts, periodicals and microfilm, this research library is one of the largest of its kind on the Eastern Seaboard. Many of the library’s materials were donated by the late Jack Ladson.

The library will be open on Monday through Friday, April 21-25, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., with a short closure for lunch from 1-2 p.m. On Saturday, April 26, the facility will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. For appointments outside regular business hours, call the library.

The Ladson is located within the Dr. Mark and Tonya Spivey Public Library, 610 Jackson Street in Vidalia. Altama Museum of Art and History Housed in the 108-year-old Brazell House, the home of The Altama Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum features over 260 pieces and 210 patterns of Staffordshire porcelain. The museum is also the showplace of 24 first-edition, handcolored prints by John James Audubon. Additionally, there are exhibits of 18th and 19th century European prints, the Victorian Parlor and Bedroom and historic local photography.

The history of the Girl Scouts of America within Vidalia and Toombs County is also displayed within the museum, and the outdoor Three Sisters Garden features a classical design and plantings.

Currently, the museum is displaying its Fiber Arts Show, which showcases historic and handmade local pieces of fiber arts, such as rugs, clothing, quilts, and more.

The museum will be open from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Thursday, and Friday, April 21, 24, and 25.

Contributions from the City of Vidalia and Altama members enable patrons to visit the museum at no charge.
