On Monday of last week Vidalia High School’s Jack Godbee signed his appointment with the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

He is the next in a great line of kids from VHS that have made the commitment to serve their country and have been selected to attend a Service Academy, including his brother Tom, who is at West Point. His other brother Barron is also currently a Marine.

Godbee was a top student and athlete for the Indians but has signed an academic scholarship to attend the Naval Academy.

Godbee said of the moment, “It feels pretty good for this day to come. I have worked hard throughout high school to have this opportunity and to achieve this goal. I know that my parents are happy for me, and I know that I can use this to help serve my community.

“I know this is going to be hard, but I am looking forward to it and in the ways that it will help me grow. I know this will challenge me, but I look forward to meeting with great people and having them by my side through this time. I know that this will lead to good things in life. My dad always wanted one of us to go to the Naval Academy, obviously my brother going to West Point was also a big deal, but he was in the Navy, so he is happy about this.

“I have so many people to thank for this, all of my friends that have been there for me and have pushed me, My parents and my brothers who have kept me on the path and made me better, and all of my coaches that have made me better along the way, and Mr. Meredith for what he did for me along this path.”

His mother Mandy added, “We are so proud of Jack. This is something that he has always wanted to do, and this was his number one pick. We were hopeful that this would pan out, and when the letter came in the mail, it was a very big day for the family. Jack is going to have his work cut out for him, but he has been prepared growing up in our household. He has set himself up for this and he is going to be fine, and he is going to do big things.”
